When to worry about a persistent mouth sore with tongue cancer

Tongue cancer may affect the side, top, or underside of the tongue. A sore can be accompanied by a thickened area, a firm edge, altered sensation, or pain that travels toward the ear. Use gentle oral hygiene, avoid tobacco and alcohol, choose foods that do not irritate the area, and do not disturb the sore while waiting for assessment.

Seek prompt advice for a firm tongue area, persistent bleeding, worsening pain, numbness, difficulty moving the tongue, speech changes, swallowing problems, or a new neck lump. Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing, saliva cannot be swallowed, or bleeding is heavy and ongoing. These symptoms require timely clinical attention regardless of the level of discomfort.
