When to worry about persistent itching with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma affects the skin and may cause dry, scaly, discoloured, thickened, or patchy areas. Itching can vary across the body and may disturb sleep or lead to scratching that breaks the skin. Eczema, allergy, infection, dryness, and treatment reactions can cause similar symptoms.

Tell your clinician about spreading rash, new raised areas, open skin, crusting, pain, swelling, fever, or itching that becomes difficult to control. The appearance and distribution of the skin can help guide an examination.

Use the moisturiser and prescribed skin treatments recommended by your team. Keep nails short, use gentle fragrance-free products, and choose lukewarm rather than hot water. Avoid scratching when possible; cool compresses may soothe an irritated area.

Record where the itching occurs, how it affects sleep, and whether it followed a new medicine or product. Contact your dermatology or oncology team if symptoms are persistent, spreading, or interfering with daily activities.

Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, blistering or peeling skin, facial swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, or signs of infection. Emergency care is needed for swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.

Do not apply a new medicated cream over a widespread rash without advice. Prompt assessment can distinguish disease activity from an allergic or treatment-related reaction.
