When to worry about persistent indigestion with stomach cancer

Stomach cancer and its treatment can affect appetite, digestion, and how quickly the stomach empties. You may notice fullness after small meals, upper-abdominal discomfort, reflux, nausea, belching, or indigestion. These symptoms can also arise from ulcers, reflux, medicines, infection, or other digestive conditions.

Pay attention to a persistent change rather than trying to interpret it alone. Swallowing trouble, repeated vomiting, reduced appetite, unplanned weight loss, black stools, or worsening tiredness are details your clinician needs to know.

Write down meals, discomfort, nausea, vomiting, bowel changes, and medicines. Smaller meals and staying upright after eating may help some people, but follow the advice given by your oncology and nutrition teams.

Arrange a review when indigestion continues, limits eating, disturbs sleep, or changes after treatment. Do not stop prescribed treatment or rely on regular antacids without checking whether they are suitable with your medicines.

Seek urgent help if you vomit blood, pass black stools, cannot keep fluids down, develop severe abdominal pain, become faint, or feel suddenly very weak. Contact emergency services for breathing difficulty or collapse.

A new inability to eat or drink also needs prompt advice because dehydration and poor nutrition can develop quickly. For symptoms that are concerning but stable, contact your cancer team the same day.
