When to worry about a persistent cough with small cell lung cancer

A tumour can irritate or narrow an airway, causing repeated coughing. Treatment, infection, reflux, or fluid around the lung can also contribute. Tell the team whether the cough is dry or brings up mucus, and whether it affects sleep, eating, or speaking.

Keep a simple record of when the cough began, how often it occurs, and what makes it worse. Mention breathlessness, chest discomfort, fever, wheezing, or blood-stained phlegm at your next contact. Do not start cough medicines or supplements without checking, because they may interact with treatment or hide a worsening problem.

Contact your oncology team quickly for a cough that suddenly worsens, new breathlessness, fever, chest pain, confusion, or coughing blood. Seek emergency help if breathing becomes severely difficult, lips look blue, or you cannot speak in full sentences. These signs need assessment regardless of how long the cough has been present.
