When to worry about persistent abdominal pain with pancreatic cancer

Pain from pancreatic cancer may be felt in the upper abdomen and can travel through to the back. It may change with meals or position. Digestive problems, constipation, treatment effects, infection, or gallbladder disease can cause similar discomfort. Your team may review digestion, weight change, jaundice, bowel movements, medicines, and treatment timing when assessing the symptom.

Record the pain location, intensity, timing, relation to food or lying down, and whether it reaches the back. Include nausea, vomiting, pale or oily stools, diarrhoea, constipation, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes. Use prescribed pain relief and digestive medicines as directed. Check before taking a new medicine because it may affect treatment or liver function.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, fainting, confusion, trouble breathing, a rigid or swollen abdomen, black stools, or blood in vomit. New jaundice with fever, shaking chills, marked drowsiness, or rapidly worsening pain needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the pain may relate to the pancreas, digestion, treatment, or another condition. Ask how to use prescribed analgesia, whether pancreatic enzyme support is relevant, and which changes require same-day contact or emergency help.
