When to worry about persistent abdominal pain with bowel cancer

Bowel cancer can cause cramping or aching when a tumour affects the bowel passage or nearby tissues. Pain may also reflect constipation, trapped gas, infection, treatment, or another bowel disorder. Tell your team about changes in bowel frequency, stool appearance, bloating, appetite, and weight, along with the pain itself.

Keep notes about the pain's timing, location, duration, relation to meals or bowel movements, and response to prescribed medicine. Follow your treatment instructions and check before using laxatives, anti-inflammatory medicine, or supplements. Contact the cancer team if pain persists, interferes with sleep or eating, or occurs with a new bowel habit or increasing fatigue.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly escalating pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, fever with chills, or black or bloody stools. These features can signal bowel blockage, bleeding, infection, or another problem requiring immediate assessment.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a bowel complication, treatment effect, or another cause; which medicines are appropriate; and what to do if you cannot pass stool or gas. Confirm the after-hours contact route.
