When to worry about stopped periods with an imperforate hymen

An imperforate hymen is tissue that completely covers the vaginal opening. Menstrual blood may be unable to leave the vagina, which can cause absent periods alongside recurring lower abdominal or pelvic pain. Most people with Imperforate Hymen notice periods stopped. Pressure may affect urination or bowel movements, and a bulge at the vaginal opening may be noticed. Other causes of absent periods remain possible, so examination is needed.

Contact a GP, paediatrician, or gynaecologist if periods have not started when expected, particularly when monthly pain or pelvic pressure occurs. A clinician can discuss symptoms sensitively and may use an external examination and imaging to understand the anatomy. Treatment is a planned procedure to create an opening and allow drainage when appropriate. Do not insert objects or attempt to open the tissue yourself.

Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, inability to pass urine, fainting, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. These can indicate significant pressure or another urgent pelvic problem. Prompt review is also needed if pain is recurring each month without menstrual flow, even when the discomfort settles between episodes.

Ask whether the anatomy could be blocking menstrual flow, which examination or scan is suitable, how discomfort can be managed, and what recovery and follow-up involve if a procedure is recommended.
