When to worry about stopped periods with hyperprolactinaemia

Prolactin is a hormone involved in milk production. When its level is high outside expected situations, it can interrupt the hormone signals that support ovulation and menstrual bleeding. Most people with Hyperprolactinaemia notice periods stopped, but stopped periods can have other explanations too. High prolactin may also be accompanied by milky nipple discharge, reduced sexual interest, vaginal dryness, headache, or changes in vision.

Book a medical appointment if periods stop or become markedly irregular. Tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding, medicines, supplements, headaches, vision symptoms, and nipple discharge. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, repeat prolactin measurement, thyroid testing, and review of medicines or other hormone signals. Follow instructions about timing and preparation for blood tests, and do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

Seek urgent care for a sudden or severe headache, new loss of vision, confusion, fainting, or weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent headache, worsening vision changes, or unexpected bleeding with significant pain. These symptoms need assessment on their own, regardless of whether a prolactin result is already known.

Ask what may be raising prolactin, whether a repeat blood test is needed, how medicines could contribute, whether thyroid or pregnancy testing is appropriate, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review.
