When to worry about pelvic pain with endometriosis

Endometriosis can cause inflammation and irritation where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. Pain may occur before or during periods, between periods, during sex, or with bowel movements or urination. A flare can feel different from one cycle to another, and pain severity does not always show how much disease is present. New symptoms still deserve consideration because infection, ovarian problems, or pregnancy-related conditions can overlap.

Arrange an appointment if pain is affecting work, sleep, movement, sex, bowel habits, or urination, or if your current plan is no longer helping. Keep notes on timing, triggers, bleeding, bowel and bladder symptoms, medicines, and missed activities. Bring this record to your clinician. Ask for a review of pain control and whether further assessment is appropriate, especially if symptoms are new or steadily changing.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, a swollen or rigid abdomen, or heavy bleeding with weakness. Get prompt advice if pregnancy is possible, particularly when pain is one-sided or accompanied by bleeding or dizziness. Emergency symptoms should not be attributed to endometriosis without assessment.

Ask whether the pattern could reflect endometriosis or another condition, whether examination or imaging is needed, and how treatment choices fit fertility or pregnancy plans. Ask which symptoms require same-day care.
