What palpitations can mean with anaemia

Palpitations are an awareness of your heartbeat, such as pounding, fluttering, racing, or skipped beats. Palpitations is a common presentation of Anaemia. When there are fewer healthy red blood cells or less haemoglobin to carry oxygen, the heart may beat faster or more forcefully to meet the body's needs. This can be more noticeable with activity, stress, fever, dehydration, or poor sleep.

Anaemia has several possible causes, including blood loss, low iron or vitamin levels, long-term illness, and inherited blood conditions. A clinician may need to check the type and cause rather than assuming that every palpitation is from anaemia. An irregular rhythm, thyroid problem, medication effect, or another heart or lung condition can also cause similar sensations.

What to do when palpitations occur

Stop strenuous activity, sit or lie somewhere safe, and breathe slowly. Note when the episode began, how it feels, what you were doing, and whether it stops with rest. Record associated symptoms such as dizziness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, or near-fainting. Avoid taking extra iron or changing prescribed medicines without medical advice, because treatment depends on the cause and excess iron can be harmful.

Book a medical appointment if episodes are new, becoming more frequent, lasting longer, or affecting daily activities. Assessment may include a pulse and blood-pressure check, a heart tracing, and blood tests such as a full blood count and iron studies. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, and any bleeding symptoms to the appointment.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services if palpitations come with chest pain or pressure, severe difficulty breathing, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or marked weakness. Get urgent assessment for a heartbeat that remains very fast or irregular, especially with dizziness or feeling close to fainting. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.

Seek prompt medical advice for possible ongoing blood loss, such as heavy bleeding, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, or rapidly worsening tiredness and breathlessness. A clinician can decide how quickly you need examination and testing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the anaemia and whether your blood tests show iron, vitamin, or other abnormalities. Ask whether the palpitations need a heart tracing or longer rhythm monitoring, which symptoms should trigger emergency help, and when your results should be reviewed. If blood loss is possible, ask what source needs checking and how to manage it safely.

Questions people ask

Can anaemia cause a fast heartbeat?

Yes. Reduced oxygen delivery can make the heart beat faster or more forcefully, which may feel like palpitations. Other causes are possible, so persistent or recurring symptoms need assessment.

Should I take iron when palpitations are caused by anaemia?

Only take iron when a clinician has advised it or confirmed that iron deficiency is present. Anaemia has different causes, and the appropriate treatment depends on the cause.

When are palpitations an emergency?
