When to Worry About Painful Urination With Prostatitis

Prostatitis can irritate the prostate and the urinary passage, causing burning, discomfort, a frequent urge to urinate, a weak stream, or pain in the pelvis, lower back, or area between the scrotum and anus. Symptoms may begin suddenly or build gradually. The same pattern can also occur with other urinary conditions, so a clinician may need a urine sample and an examination to clarify the cause.

Arrange a medical assessment if painful urination continues, returns, or interferes with sleep or normal activities. Drink fluids unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid alcohol or drinks that noticeably worsen bladder irritation. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed; do not use leftover antibiotics or share medicine. Tell the clinician about medicines, recent procedures, urinary retention, and any discharge.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop a high temperature with shaking chills, become confused or faint, repeatedly vomit, or feel rapidly worse. Contact a clinician promptly for visible blood in the urine, new severe pelvic or back pain, or symptoms that do not improve with the treatment plan. These signs can indicate a more serious infection or blockage requiring timely assessment.

Ask what tests are needed, whether the prostate or bladder may be involved, how soon improvement should begin, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently. Check whether any of your current medicines could affect urination or interact with treatment.
