When to worry about pain during sex with pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection affecting the upper reproductive organs. Inflammation can make deep penetration painful and may also cause lower abdominal pain, abnormal discharge, bleeding between periods or after sex, fever, or pain when urinating. Symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so pain during sex does not identify the cause by itself. Early assessment helps determine whether treatment is needed and whether a partner also needs advice.

Arrange medical care rather than waiting for symptoms to settle if pelvic inflammatory disease is suspected. Avoid sex until you have been assessed and, if treatment is prescribed, follow the full plan. Record pain timing, discharge changes, bleeding, temperature symptoms, and any chance of pregnancy. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the right medicine depends on the clinical assessment.

Get urgent help for intense or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fever with feeling very unwell, faintness, confusion, or vomiting that prevents drinking. Seek prompt advice for new bleeding, worsening discharge, or pain during pregnancy or when pregnancy is possible. Untreated pelvic infection can cause complications, so do not delay an assessment when warning signs appear.

Ask which tests may clarify the infection, whether pregnancy testing is needed, and when it is safe to resume sex. Ask whether partners need testing or treatment, how to take prescribed medicine, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently. Mention allergies, recent antibiotics, and any symptoms your partner has noticed.
