When to worry about an oily scalp with seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis often affects oil-rich areas, including the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, sides of the nose, and behind the ears. The scalp may feel greasy while shedding yellowish or white scale. Flares can be influenced by stress, illness, weather, or irritating products, and symptoms may settle and return over time.

Use a gentle washing routine and follow your prescribed or recommended medicated shampoo directions. Let the product contact the scalp as directed, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid scratching, picking scale, fragranced irritants, and oily styling products on inflamed skin. Keep a record of flare patterns and product reactions.
