When to worry about numbness in the hands and feet during chemotherapy

Numbness or Tingling in Hands and Feet is a very common presentation of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy. Treatment can irritate nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, causing pins and needles, reduced feeling, burning, electric-shock sensations, or increased sensitivity to touch and temperature.

Symptoms may interfere with buttons, writing, walking, balance, or noticing an injury. They can change during treatment and may persist afterward, so the oncology team needs a clear description of their pattern. Other problems, such as vitamin deficiency, diabetes, pressure on a nerve, or an infection, can produce similar sensations and may need separate evaluation.

Tell the oncology team when symptoms begin and whether they are spreading or affecting sleep, grip, walking, or balance. Do not change a chemotherapy schedule or take a supplement for nerve symptoms without advice. Use handrails, keep walkways clear, wear supportive footwear, and check hands and feet for blisters or cuts that reduced feeling may hide.

Test bath water with a part of the body that has normal sensation, use gloves for hot or sharp objects, and take care with heaters and cooking equipment. Ask whether a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, or pain specialist could help with specific difficulties.

Contact the oncology team promptly for rapidly worsening numbness, new weakness, trouble fastening clothes, dropping objects, stumbling, or difficulty climbing stairs. Report severe burning pain, symptoms that interfere with sleep, or a change that prevents normal self-care.

Seek urgent help for sudden one-sided weakness or numbness, new facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe breathing difficulty, loss of bladder or bowel control, or an inability to walk. These signs can have causes that require immediate assessment and should not be attributed to chemotherapy without evaluation.

Ask how your symptoms will be graded, whether treatment needs adjustment, and which medicines or therapies may help. Ask about fall prevention, safe exercise, foot care, driving, work hazards, and who to contact outside clinic hours if the sensation changes suddenly.
