When to worry about nosebleed with common cold

A cold can inflame and dry the nasal lining. Frequent wiping, sneezing, and forceful nose blowing may break tiny vessels near the front of the nose. Dry indoor air can add to the irritation. Other causes include an injury, allergy, or medicine that affects clotting, particularly when episodes keep returning after the cold improves.

Sit upright and lean forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose firmly and continuously while breathing through your mouth. Do not tilt your head back or check too soon. Once it settles, avoid nose blowing, picking, heavy exertion, and very hot drinks for a while; use gentle moisture measures recommended by a clinician or pharmacist.

Speak with a clinician if nosebleeds recur, happen without irritation, or occur with easy bruising, unusual tiredness, high fever, or worsening illness. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, dizziness, faintness, breathing difficulty, a significant facial injury, or bleeding that does not stop with sustained pressure. Children who swallow a lot of blood may need prompt assessment.
