When to worry about night pain with septic arthritis

Septic arthritis is an infection inside a joint. Inflammation can cause deep pain at rest and may make even small movements difficult. The joint may become warm, swollen, and tender, and you may feel unwell or develop fever and chills. Because infection can damage joint tissues, severe or quickly changing symptoms should be assessed without waiting for the pain to settle overnight. Night pain can occur with this condition, but the surrounding symptoms and speed of change guide urgency.

Contact an urgent medical service if you have suspected or diagnosed septic arthritis and the pain is worsening, sleep is repeatedly interrupted, or movement is becoming more limited. Rest the joint in a comfortable position and avoid forcing movement or massaging the swollen area. Take prescribed treatment as directed. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine, because the correct treatment depends on the joint and the infection.

Seek emergency help for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, shaking chills, or rapidly spreading redness. Immediate assessment is also needed when a joint becomes intensely painful, hot, and swollen over a short time, particularly if you cannot bear weight or use the limb. These symptoms can accompany a serious infection and require examination and treatment in person.
