When to worry about a new lump or swelling with penile cancer

The change may be on the foreskin, glans, shaft, or nearby groin, where lymph nodes can become enlarged. It may occur with a sore, colour change, thickened skin, bleeding, discharge, or difficulty moving the foreskin. Infection, irritation, injury, and treatment effects can also cause swelling.

Appearance and discomfort cannot establish the cause. Tell the clinician how long it has been present, whether it is enlarging, and whether urination, erections, or sexual activity have changed.

Contact your urology or oncology team promptly and describe the exact site without embarrassment. Mention bleeding, discharge, fever, pain, urine flow changes, and any recent procedure or injury. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and do not use creams or antiseptics unless advised.

Assessment may involve a careful examination of the penis and groin, with imaging or tissue sampling when needed. The team can explain how to protect treated skin and manage discomfort.

Seek urgent care for inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding, rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever with chills, or swelling that affects breathing. These symptoms require immediate attention and should not wait for a routine cancer appointment.

Ask whether the penis and groin lymph nodes both need checking, which test may clarify the cause, how to care for the skin, and what changes require same-day contact. Ask how treatment could affect urination, sexual function, or fertility if those concerns apply.
