When should you worry about nausea if you have pancreatitis?

Inflammation of the pancreas can disturb digestion and cause nausea, vomiting, and pain in the upper abdomen that may spread to the back. The illness can become serious when inflammation affects fluid balance or other organs, so a known diagnosis with worsening symptoms should not be managed alone.

Follow the treatment plan from your medical team and avoid alcohol. Do not take extra painkillers or anti-sickness medicines unless advised, particularly if you are vomiting or have other conditions. Seek guidance about fluids and food rather than forcing meals when nausea is strong.

Go to an emergency department for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, fever, faintness, confusion, breathing difficulty, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your treating team promptly if nausea is new, persistent, or different from your usual symptoms.
