When to worry about nausea with gallstones

Nausea is a common presentation of Gallstones. A stone can obstruct bile flow and trigger discomfort, often after eating, with pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen that may travel to the back or shoulder. Some gallstones cause no symptoms, while an episode may be intense and prolonged.

Fever, chills, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, or worsening tenderness can suggest inflammation or blockage. Nausea by itself does not show that a gallstone is the cause.

Rest, take small sips of fluid, and avoid foods that clearly trigger pain, especially heavy meals. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else’s pain medicine. If episodes recur, arrange a review because an examination and imaging may be needed.

Go to urgent care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever or chills, yellow skin or eyes, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, a swollen abdomen, or inability to drink. These features can accompany a blocked or inflamed biliary system and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Ask whether your symptoms need an ultrasound, how to manage another attack, and whether surgery or another treatment should be discussed. Tell the clinician about previous episodes, pregnancy, liver disease, and every medicine or supplement.
