When to worry about thickened nails with nail fungus

Fungal organisms can alter the nail plate, causing it to become thicker, crumbly, yellowish, white, or separated from the nail bed. Thickening may make shoes uncomfortable and can trap debris underneath. Changes can develop gradually, and a damaged or inflamed nail can resemble fungal disease, so examination may be needed before treatment.

Keep the nail clean and dry, change damp socks, choose footwear with room for the toes, and avoid sharing nail tools. Do not cut deeply into thick material or scrape under the nail. If a clinician has recommended treatment, use it for the advised course and report irritation or no improvement rather than changing it on your own.

Seek assessment for increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or difficulty walking. Arrange care sooner if diabetes, reduced circulation, reduced sensation, or a weakened immune system makes foot injuries harder to notice or heal. A nail that changes quickly, becomes dark without an injury, or fails to improve with appropriate care also needs review.
