When to worry about ridged nails with brittle nail syndrome

Brittle nail syndrome describes nails that split, peel, crack, or break easily. Fine lengthwise ridges can make the surface feel uneven, while repeated wetting, drying, chemicals, or friction may increase fragility. Ridged Nails is a common presentation of Brittle Nail Syndrome, but the pattern and the condition of the surrounding skin still matter.

Keep nails short and smooth rough edges with a fine file. Wear gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products, dry hands carefully, and apply a bland moisturiser to nails and cuticles. Avoid peeling layers away, using nails as tools, or repeated cosmetic procedures while the nail surface is fragile.

Arrange a review if splitting continues despite protection, several nails change suddenly, or the nail becomes painful, swollen, discoloured, or detached. Get advice for bleeding cracks, pus, or skin inflammation around the nail. A clinician can check for infection, trauma, medication effects, or another nail disorder that may need different care.
