When to worry about discoloured nails and nail fungus

Discoloured Nails is a very common presentation of Nail Fungus. An affected nail may become yellow, white, brown, or cloudy, with thickening, crumbling, ridges, or debris beneath the edge. The change often develops gradually and may affect more than one nail.

Other problems can resemble nail fungus, including repeated injury, psoriasis, bacterial infection, and pigment changes. Confirming the cause matters because treatments differ, and some medicines require a clinician to check your health and other medicines first.

Keep feet or hands dry, change damp socks or gloves, trim nails straight across, and do not share nail clippers or towels. Clean tools after use and avoid picking debris from beneath the nail. If the nail is thick, painful, or difficult to cut, let a clinician or trained professional help.

A clinician may inspect the nail and, when needed, test a clipping or scraping before recommending treatment. Use treatment for the full advised course and do not stop solely because the colour has started to change.

Arrange review if the nail is painful, warm, swollen, draining, or surrounded by spreading redness. Seek prompt advice if several nails change suddenly, the nail lifts after an injury, or walking becomes difficult. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should arrange assessment early for a foot or nail problem.

Ask whether testing is needed, how long treatment may take to show nail growth, and how to protect nearby skin and nails. Tell the clinician about athlete’s foot, previous treatments, diabetes, circulation concerns, allergies, and regular medicines.
