When to worry about discoloured nails and green nail syndrome

Discoloured Nails is a common presentation of Green Nail Syndrome. The nail can develop a green, blue-green, or darker shade when moisture and bacterial growth are trapped beneath or around a partly separated nail. The colour may be more visible as the nail grows, and the involved nail may feel loose or fragile.

Colour change can have other causes, including injury, fungal infection, medication effects, or pigment conditions. A clinician may need to inspect the nail, surrounding skin, and any separation before choosing treatment.

Keep the nail clean and dry, trim only loose edges carefully, and avoid artificial nails, polish, and picking until the cause is clearer. Wear gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products, then dry the fingers thoroughly. Do not seal a separated nail beneath an artificial covering.

A clinician may recommend a topical treatment or another approach after examination. Use prescribed treatment exactly as directed and keep follow-up if the nail does not improve as it grows.

Arrange a prompt appointment if the nail is painful, warm, swollen, draining, or surrounded by spreading redness. Seek urgent advice if you develop fever, feel unwell, or have reduced immune function. Review is also sensible when several nails change, the colour follows an injury, or the nail continues to detach.

Ask what may be causing the colour, whether the nail is separated, how to keep it dry, and which products or activities to pause. Mention diabetes, circulation problems, immune conditions, recent manicures, and any medicines that affect your skin or nails.
