When to worry about muscle aches with malaria

Malaria may cause muscle aches alongside fever, chills, sweating, headache, unusual tiredness, or nausea. The illness can become serious, particularly when treatment is delayed. Aches are not specific to malaria, so recent travel or residence in a malaria-risk area and the full symptom pattern matter when a clinician decides what tests are needed.

Contact a healthcare service promptly if malaria is possible, especially after travel to an affected area. Tell the clinician where you have been, when you returned, and whether fever has come and gone. Rest, take fluids if you can, and use only medicines that a clinician or pharmacist says are suitable for you. Do not wait for aches to settle before seeking testing.

Seek urgent care for high or recurring fever, confusion, extreme drowsiness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, seizures, fainting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or very little urine. A person who is pregnant, very young, older, or immunocompromised should be assessed quickly when malaria is suspected.
