When to worry about morning sickness with twins or a multiple pregnancy

Pregnancy with twins or more can bring substantial nausea and vomiting. Symptoms may be mild or severe and can occur beyond the morning. The main concern is whether you can maintain fluids, nutrition and prescribed medicines while your body supports more than one baby.

A maternity team can assess hydration, urine changes, weight concerns, electrolyte balance and other causes of vomiting. They can also review medicines that are suitable in pregnancy and arrange treatment when home measures are not enough.

Tell your maternity team if vomiting is becoming more frequent or interferes with drinking, eating, rest or daily tasks. Keep a simple record of fluids, food, urine, vomiting episodes and medicines. If tolerated, try small frequent sips and plain foods, but do not use these measures to postpone care when symptoms are severe.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for inability to keep fluids down, very little or dark urine, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, fever, chest pain or breathing difficulty. Ask for prompt advice if you cannot take prescribed medicines or symptoms are rapidly worsening. Dehydration can affect your wellbeing and requires timely treatment.
