When to worry about morning sickness with hyperemesis gravidarum

Hyperemesis gravidarum is severe pregnancy sickness that can make it difficult to keep down fluids, food or prescribed medicines. It may cause dry mouth, intense thirst, dark urine, reduced urination, dizziness, weakness and weight loss. Vomiting may happen at any time, not only in the morning.

Severity can change quickly. A maternity or medical team may assess hydration, electrolytes, nutrition and other causes of vomiting. Treatment can include anti-sickness medicine, fluids and nutritional support, depending on your symptoms and pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team or clinician early if vomiting is stopping you from drinking, eating or taking essential medicines. While arranging advice, take small sips often if tolerated and note what stays down, urine changes and any medicines taken. Do not delay care because the vomiting is called morning sickness.

Seek urgent assessment if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little or no urine, feel faint or confused, have severe weakness, blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, fever, chest pain or trouble breathing. Contact your maternity team promptly if symptoms are worsening or you cannot manage daily activities. Dehydration and nutritional problems need treatment, not endurance.
