Short answer

Missed Period is a common presentation of Hyperprolactinaemia, but a pregnancy check and medical review are needed when periods stop or warning symptoms appear.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First check
Exclude pregnancy when it is possible.
Urgent warning
Sudden severe headache or vision loss needs urgent assessment.

How prolactin can affect periods

Prolactin is a hormone involved in breast milk production. When levels are high, it can interfere with the hormone signals that support ovulation, so periods may become irregular or stop. Most people with Hyperprolactinaemia notice missed period, but a missed period also has many other possible explanations, including pregnancy, stress, weight change, thyroid conditions, intense exercise, or other hormone changes.

High prolactin may also occur with breast discharge unrelated to feeding, reduced sexual desire, vaginal dryness, or difficulty conceiving. Headache or vision changes need particular attention.

What to do next

If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test and tell the clinician the result. Record the date of your last period, any breast discharge, headaches, vision changes, medicines, supplements, and known hormone results. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

Arrange an appointment for a missed period that persists, repeats, or concerns you. The clinician may review medicines and symptoms and decide whether repeat hormone testing or other assessment is appropriate.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent care for a sudden severe headache, new loss of vision, double vision, fainting, weakness, or confusion. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than watchful waiting.

Arrange timely medical review for ongoing breast discharge, troublesome headaches, changing vision, or periods that remain absent. Seek immediate help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, or faintness with possible pregnancy.
