When to worry about lower back pain with a herniated disc

Short answer
Lower Back Pain is a common presentation of Herniated Disc, but urgent assessment is needed for progressive weakness, saddle numbness, or new bladder and bowel problems.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why a herniated disc can hurt
A disc can bulge or tear and irritate nearby tissues or a spinal nerve. This may cause lower back pain, pain down the buttock or leg, tingling, numbness, or weakness. Most people with Herniated Disc notice lower back pain, although some have mainly leg symptoms and others have no symptoms from the disc finding. A clinical examination helps match symptoms with nerve function.
What you can do
Keep changing position and take short, comfortable walks rather than remaining in bed. Avoid heavy lifting, forceful bending, and movements that send sharper pain down the leg. Follow a personalised exercise plan when advised, and note changes in strength, sensation, walking, coughing-related pain, and sleep. Pain relief should be chosen with a clinician or pharmacist if you have other health conditions.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for new difficulty passing urine, loss of bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or weakness affecting both legs. Seek prompt assessment when leg weakness is worsening, walking becomes unsafe, or pain follows major trauma. Arrange review for persistent pain, recurring leg symptoms, or numbness that interferes with work, sleep, or self-care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which nerve signs were found, how to monitor strength and sensation, which activities are safe, and when imaging or specialist review would be considered. Discuss a graded rehabilitation plan and the symptoms that should prompt immediate return.

Questions people ask
Is leg pain always an emergency with a herniated disc?
No. Leg pain can occur with nerve irritation, but rapidly worsening weakness or bladder, bowel, or groin sensation changes require emergency assessment.
Is bed rest the best response?
Long periods in bed can make recovery harder. Gentle movement within tolerance is usually a better starting point unless a clinician advises otherwise.
