When to worry about loss of appetite with stomach cancer

Stomach cancer can affect digestion, fullness, nausea, and the body's energy needs. Treatment may also alter taste, cause nausea, irritate the stomach, or make eating tiring. Appetite loss is not specific to cancer and does not show what is causing a change on its own. Your oncology team can assess the pattern alongside symptoms and treatment timing.

Tell the oncology team how much you are eating and drinking, whether food causes pain or early fullness, and whether vomiting or swallowing trouble is present. Try small, frequent portions and choose foods that are easier to tolerate. Follow prescribed anti-nausea advice, and ask before adding supplements or changing medicines. Keep taking treatment medicines as directed unless your clinician tells you otherwise.

Seek urgent medical help for vomiting that will not settle, inability to keep fluids down, vomit that looks bloody or like coffee grounds, black stools, severe or sudden abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or severe weakness. Contact the cancer team quickly if appetite loss is steadily worsening or makes it difficult to drink, take essential medicines, or manage at home.

Ask whether the appetite change could be related to the cancer, treatment, pain, constipation, or another condition. Ask about a dietitian, nausea control, safe nourishing drinks, and which symptoms require same-day advice.
