When to worry about loss of appetite with sepsis

Sepsis is the body's dangerous response to an infection. Appetite may fall because infection and inflammation affect the gut, energy use, and alertness. Loss of appetite alone has many possible causes and does not identify sepsis. In someone who has a suspected or diagnosed infection, the overall pattern matters more than eating less.

If sepsis has been mentioned or diagnosed, follow the treatment plan and tell the clinical team that appetite has changed. Do not force food. If the person is awake and able to swallow, offer small sips of fluid while arranging care, unless a clinician has given different fluid advice. Keep a record of new symptoms, medicines, urine output, and changes in alertness.

Call emergency services now for new confusion, difficulty staying awake, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, a seizure, rapidly spreading skin discoloration, or an inability to keep fluids down. Urgent assessment is also needed when appetite loss accompanies a marked decline, severe weakness, fast breathing, or much less urine. Do not wait for appetite to return.

Ask what infection is suspected, which symptoms should trigger emergency review, how to manage fluids, and whether any medicine could be worsening nausea or appetite. Ask when follow-up should occur and who to contact outside clinic hours.
