When should you worry about limping with a stress fracture?

Short answer
Limping is a common presentation of Stress Fracture, and a persistent or worsening limp should be assessed rather than walked through.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical response
- Repeated loading can lead to pain and a protective change in stride.
- Until reviewed
- Stop impact activity that causes pain or limping.
- Urgent signs
- Inability to bear weight, deformity, worsening rest pain, or a cold numb limb.
What a stress-fracture limp can mean
A stress fracture is a small injury caused by repeated loading. Pain often increases with activity, and you may change your stride to reduce pressure on the sore area. A limp that continues at rest, appears earlier during activity, or becomes more pronounced suggests the bone is not tolerating the current load. Pain can occur in the foot, shin, thigh, or hip depending on the bone involved.
Protect the area
Stop running, jumping, and other impact activity that brings on pain or limping. Do not use a pain-free period as a reason to return quickly to sport. Arrange an assessment so a clinician can examine the painful area and advise on weight-bearing, support, and a gradual return. Note the activity that preceded symptoms and whether pain occurs during ordinary walking.
When to seek care
Seek prompt care for pain that is worsening, present during rest or sleep, or preventing normal walking. Urgent assessment is needed after a sudden injury, when you cannot bear weight, or if the limb is visibly deformed, cold, pale, numb, or increasingly swollen. Fever with redness and warmth also needs urgent review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which activities and amount of weight-bearing are safe, whether you need a boot or crutches, and how healing will be monitored. Ask what pain pattern means you should stop rehabilitation or return sooner.
