When to worry about leg numbness and tingling with a herniated disc

A herniated disc can irritate or compress a nerve as it leaves the spine, causing altered sensation that travels from the back or buttock into the leg. The exact area can vary with the nerve involved. Sensation changes that are spreading, persistent, or joined by weakness deserve clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Keep gently mobile if movement is safe, and avoid heavy lifting, forceful twisting, or positions that sharply increase leg symptoms. Do not drive if numbness or weakness affects pedal control. Record when symptoms began, where they travel, and any change in walking or strength so a clinician can assess the nerve function.

Seek emergency care immediately for difficulty starting or controlling urination, loss of bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or rapidly worsening weakness in one or both legs. Arrange prompt assessment for a foot that drags, frequent falls, progressive numbness, severe unrelenting pain, or symptoms after significant injury. Fever or feeling very unwell with back pain also needs urgent review.

Ask which nerve findings need monitoring, what activity is safe, and when you should return. Report bladder or bowel changes, saddle-area numbness, weakness, falls, fever, recent injury, and medicines you have tried.
