When to worry about leaking urine with overactive bladder

Overactive bladder involves a sudden urge to pass urine, often with frequent daytime trips or waking at night. Leakage may happen because the urge arrives before you reach a toilet. Urine loss can also relate to infection, constipation, medicines, pelvic floor changes, or another bladder problem, so a new symptom merits review.

Keep a bladder diary showing drinks, toilet visits, urgency, leaks, and triggers such as coughing or rushing. Avoid becoming dehydrated, and notice whether caffeine or fizzy drinks worsen urgency. A clinician can check your urine, review medicines, and discuss bladder training, pelvic floor therapy, or other suitable options.

Seek prompt care for blood in the urine, burning with fever, inability to pass urine, new severe back or lower abdominal pain, or sudden loss of bladder control with leg weakness or numbness. Arrange a routine review when leakage is new, worsening, interfering with sleep or activities, or accompanied by pain.
