When to worry about kneecap pain with patellar dislocation

A dislocation can stretch tissues around the kneecap and irritate the joint, so pain, swelling, and a sense of instability may continue after the kneecap moves back into place. A knee that remains deformed, catches, or cannot move normally may have an associated injury that needs examination.

Stop the activity and keep the knee in the most comfortable position. Support the leg without trying to force the kneecap back or repeatedly testing its movement. Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if comfortable. Arrange medical assessment after a suspected dislocation, even if the kneecap appears to have relocated.

Seek emergency care if the kneecap is still out of place, the leg looks deformed, pain is severe, or you cannot stand or straighten the knee. Get urgent help for increasing swelling, loss of sensation or movement, or a foot that becomes pale, blue, or cold. Recurrent slipping, persistent instability, or pain that does not settle also needs review.

Ask whether the kneecap relocated fully, whether the joint needs imaging, how long to use support, and which exercises can restore control. Discuss what to do if the knee slips again and when normal walking or sport can resume.
