When to worry about knee swelling with a meniscus tear

Short answer
Knee Swelling is a common presentation of Meniscus Tear. Seek prompt care if swelling follows a major injury, increases quickly, or comes with severe pain, locking, inability to bear weight, or fever.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common presentation
- Knee swelling can accompany a meniscus tear.
- Urgent clues
- Rapid swelling, locking, deformity, fever, or inability to bear weight.
What swelling can show
A meniscus tear can irritate the knee and cause fluid to build up. Swelling may appear after twisting, pivoting, squatting, or a direct injury, and the knee may also click, catch, or feel painful along the joint line. The timing and amount of swelling vary. A swollen knee after an injury can involve ligaments, bone, or the joint lining as well, so swelling alone cannot identify the injured structure.
What to do while waiting
Stop the movement that caused the pain and avoid twisting, deep squats, and impact exercise. Rest with the leg elevated, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, and use support only if it helps you walk safely. Do not force a knee that catches or feels locked. Arrange an examination if swelling persists, walking remains limited, or the knee repeatedly gives way.
When it needs urgent attention
Seek urgent assessment after a significant injury if you cannot bear weight, the knee looks deformed, swelling becomes dramatic quickly, or the joint cannot fully bend or straighten. Get prompt care for fever, chills, redness, or increasing warmth. A knee that is locked, repeatedly buckling, or becoming more painful also warrants timely review because it may need a different treatment approach.
Questions to bring
Ask whether the examination suggests a meniscus injury or another structure, whether imaging is needed, how to protect the knee during daily activities, and which exercises are safe during recovery.
