Short answer

Knee Swelling is a common presentation of Knee Bursitis. Seek prompt medical care if swelling becomes hot, red, rapidly worse, very painful, or comes with fever or difficulty bearing weight.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the swelling may mean

Bursitis is irritation and inflammation of a small fluid-filled sac near the knee. Swelling may feel soft or tender over the affected area and can become more noticeable after kneeling, pressure, or repeated activity. A stable, mild swelling without heat or whole-body symptoms can sometimes settle with protection and rest. However, skin warmth, spreading redness, drainage, chills, or fever may signal infection in the bursa or nearby tissues. A swollen knee can also have another cause, so the pattern and examination matter.

What you can do now

Avoid kneeling and activities that press directly on the swollen area. Rest from movements that clearly increase pain, use a wrapped cold pack for short periods, and elevate the leg when resting. Do not puncture or squeeze the swelling. Arrange a clinician review if it is not settling, keeps returning, limits bending, or makes walking difficult. A clinician may check the skin, bursa, joint movement, and signs of infection before advising treatment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot or red knee, fever, chills, pus or drainage, severe worsening pain, sudden major swelling, inability to bear weight, or feeling acutely unwell. Contact a clinician soon when swelling persists despite reducing pressure, interferes with sleep or daily movement, or follows an injury. These warning signs do not prove a particular diagnosis, but they should not be managed by waiting alone.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the swelling is limited to a bursa or involves the knee joint, whether infection needs to be ruled out, which activities to avoid, and when it is safe to resume kneeling or exercise.

Questions people ask

Can knee bursitis swelling be mild?

Yes. Bursal swelling may be localized and tender, especially after pressure or kneeling, but persistent or changing swelling deserves assessment.

Should I drain the swollen area myself?

No. Needling or squeezing can introduce infection and may worsen inflammation; a clinician should decide whether drainage is appropriate.
