When should you worry about knee swelling if you have gout?

Gout can cause crystals to trigger intense inflammation inside a joint. The knee may become swollen, warm, red, and very tender, sometimes with pain that makes movement difficult. These features can overlap with a joint infection or another acute problem, so knee swelling alone does not prove that gout is responsible. Rest the knee in a comfortable position and avoid pressure or strenuous activity. Keep the joint gently supported and follow the flare plan prescribed for you. Do not start, stop, or change prescription medicines without medical advice, and do not share medication with someone else. Contact your clinician if treatment is not helping, attacks are recurring, or swelling is affecting walking.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for a hot, red, swollen knee with fever, chills, feeling faint, or feeling generally unwell, because infection can look similar to gout. Seek urgent care for severe pain that is not settling, rapidly increasing swelling, or inability to bear weight. Emergency help is needed if severe symptoms occur with confusion, collapse, or breathing difficulty.

Ask how to distinguish your usual gout pattern from symptoms that need urgent testing. Discuss your flare medicines, kidney or stomach considerations, ways to prevent future attacks, and whether the knee needs fluid testing or another examination.
