When to worry about knee pain with gout

Gout can inflame a knee joint, causing sudden pain, warmth, swelling and tenderness. A flare may make movement difficult and the skin may look red or shiny. Knee Pain is a common presentation of Gout, yet a similar pattern can occur with infection or another joint problem. The appearance and timing of symptoms cannot confirm the cause on their own.

Rest the knee from strenuous activity, keep the leg comfortably supported, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if this feels soothing. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them. Take gout medicines only as prescribed; do not start, stop or change a medicine without advice. Arrange a review if episodes are recurring, lasting longer than expected, or interfering with walking, sleep or daily tasks.

Get urgent medical help if the knee is intensely hot and swollen, pain is escalating quickly, you have fever or chills, feel faint or unwell, or cannot bear weight. These features need prompt assessment because joint infection can resemble a gout flare. Seek a routine appointment for persistent swelling, repeated attacks, new symptoms, or uncertainty about the diagnosis.

Ask whether the pattern fits gout, whether joint fluid or blood testing is needed, and how to use your flare plan. Mention your medicines, kidney or heart conditions, fever, recent injury, and how quickly the swelling appeared.
