When to Worry About a Hot, Red, Swollen Joint With Septic Arthritis

Septic arthritis is an infection inside a joint. It can cause severe pain, warmth, redness, swelling, and difficulty moving the limb. Fever, chills, unusual drowsiness, or a rapid decline can occur, but their absence does not safely rule out infection. The problem may follow an injury, procedure, skin infection, or spread of infection from elsewhere, and it needs a clinical assessment rather than observation at home.

Arrange urgent medical assessment today, particularly if the pain began suddenly or you cannot move or bear weight. Keep the joint rested and avoid squeezing, massaging, or exercising it. Do not use leftover antibiotics, since the correct treatment depends on examination and testing. Bring a list of medicines, allergies, recent procedures, injuries, and illnesses to help the care team act quickly.

Go to emergency care for fever with a hot swollen joint, shaking chills, confusion, faintness, severe weakness, rapidly worsening pain, or inability to use the limb. Redness spreading away from the joint is also a warning sign. Clinicians may take joint fluid and blood samples before or around starting treatment; delaying assessment can allow joint damage or wider illness to develop.
