When should you worry about joint pain if you have psoriatic arthritis?

Psoriatic arthritis can affect joints, tendons, fingers, toes, and the places where tendons attach to bone. Pain with prolonged morning stiffness, sausage-like swelling of a whole finger or toe, or a change in nail or skin symptoms may indicate active inflammation. A painful joint is not proof that the condition is worsening, so the pattern and examination matter.

Keep a brief record of painful joints, morning stiffness, swelling, skin changes, and missed activities. Balance rest during a flare with gentle range-of-motion movement. Continue prescribed medicines unless your treating team tells you otherwise, and report infections or medicine side effects promptly. Do not add over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicines without checking for interactions and health risks.

Arrange review when symptoms are becoming more frequent, treatment no longer controls them, or hand, foot, or spinal movement is declining. Seek urgent help for a hot red swollen joint with fever, sudden severe pain after injury, or a painful red eye with light sensitivity or blurred vision.

Ask how active inflammation is judged, whether your treatment should change, and which exercises protect affected joints. Ask when eye symptoms or a swollen whole digit require same-day care.
