When to worry about joint pain with brucellosis

Brucellosis is an infection that can cause fever, sweats, tiredness, and aching in muscles and joints. Joint pain may affect one area or several, and inflammation can sometimes involve the spine, hips, or other deep joints.

Pain alone cannot show whether a joint is infected or whether another problem is responsible. A swollen, warm, red, or very tender joint is more concerning, especially when it comes with fever or reduced movement. Back pain with fever also deserves medical attention because infection can involve spinal structures.

Arrange medical review if joint pain is new, persistent, worsening, or limiting walking, sleep, or normal movement. Tell the clinician about fever, recent animal contact, unpasteurised dairy exposure, travel, and when symptoms began; these details can help guide testing.

Take only medicines that are suitable for you and follow any treatment plan provided. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop prescribed antibiotics early, because brucellosis generally needs a clinician-directed course and follow-up.

Seek urgent assessment for a hot, red, swollen joint; severe pain with little or no movement; inability to bear weight; or fever with rapidly worsening symptoms. These features can require prompt treatment to protect the joint and identify the cause.

Go to emergency care for confusion, a seizure, fainting, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty, or persistent vomiting with inability to keep fluids down. Pregnant people, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immunity should seek advice early when fever and joint pain occur together.
