When to worry about jaundice with pancreatitis

Jaundice occurs when bilirubin cannot pass normally into the intestine. Pancreatic inflammation can narrow or obstruct the nearby bile duct, and gallstones can contribute to both pancreatitis and blockage. Dark urine, pale stools, itching, upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever may appear with the yellowing. The colour does not identify the cause, and a clinician may need blood tests and imaging to check the pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, and liver.

Contact a doctor promptly if jaundice begins or becomes more noticeable, particularly with persistent pain, fever, vomiting, or pale stools. Follow the eating, drinking, and medicine instructions given for pancreatitis. Do not drink alcohol, and do not take extra pain medicine or start supplements without checking. Write down when the yellowing started, how pain is changing, and whether urine or stools look different.

Seek emergency care for severe or escalating abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, difficulty breathing, fever with shaking chills, a swollen abdomen, or inability to keep fluids down. These features can signal a serious complication or infection and need assessment without delay.

Ask whether a bile duct blockage or gallstone may be involved, which tests are needed, what you may eat and drink, and which changes require immediate hospital care.
