When to worry about jaundice with pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer can narrow or block the bile duct, preventing bile from reaching the intestine and causing bilirubin to rise. Yellow eyes or skin may occur with dark urine, pale stools, itching, nausea, reduced appetite, or upper abdominal discomfort. A blockage can sometimes become infected, making fever and chills especially concerning.

Contact your oncology or specialist team promptly if jaundice appears or becomes deeper. Describe the start and progression, urine and stool changes, itching, pain, temperature, and ability to eat or drink. Keep your medicine list ready, and do not alter cancer treatment or take supplements without clinical advice.

Go to an emergency department for fever with chills, confusion, fainting, severe or escalating abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, or breathing difficulty. Marked weakness or inability to keep fluids down also warrants urgent care rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Ask whether bile-duct blockage or infection is suspected, which tests are needed, whether a procedure may relieve bile flow, and how symptoms affect the treatment plan. Ask for clear after-hours instructions if the jaundice changes suddenly.
