When to worry about jaundice with gallbladder cancer

Jaundice develops when bilirubin builds up, turning the skin or whites of the eyes yellow. Gallbladder cancer may affect nearby bile ducts or interfere with bile drainage. Itching, dark urine, pale stools, nausea, poor appetite, abdominal discomfort, or increasing tiredness may occur with the yellowing. These features can also have other causes, so assessment may include blood tests and scans rather than relying on appearance alone.

Call your oncology or surgical team promptly when jaundice appears or becomes more noticeable. Describe when it began and mention fever, chills, pain, vomiting, itching, confusion, or a recent procedure. Keep a current list of medicines and supplements. Follow the prescribed treatment plan, avoid alcohol and unapproved remedies, and do not delay contact because the yellowing is mild or painless.

Seek emergency care if jaundice occurs with fever, shaking chills, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or severe weakness. These symptoms can indicate infection, blocked bile flow, dehydration, or impaired liver function. Get urgent advice as well if you cannot drink, become unusually sleepy, or notice a rapid change in your condition.
