When to worry about an itchy throat with house dust mite allergy

House dust mite particles can trigger inflammation in the nose and upper airway. Mucus draining from the nose, mouth breathing, and irritation may make the throat feel tickly or itchy. You may also notice sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, watery eyes, cough, or wheezing. This symptom can occur with allergy, infection, dry air, reflux, or another irritant, so a new or persistent symptom deserves assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Reduce exposure by washing bedding regularly in hot water when suitable for the fabric, using allergen-proof covers, and keeping the bedroom as dry and dust-free as practical. Follow the treatment plan provided by your clinician, such as a recommended antihistamine or nasal treatment. Sip fluids and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Do not start, stop, or combine medicines without checking whether they are suitable for you.

Seek emergency help immediately if your throat feels tight, your lips or tongue swell, you cannot swallow saliva, your voice changes suddenly, or you have noisy or difficult breathing. Arrange prompt medical advice if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, come with wheezing, or do not settle with your usual allergy plan. A clinician can examine your throat and breathing and consider other causes.
