When to worry about itchy skin with hives

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear suddenly and fade in one area before appearing elsewhere. Individual welts often change shape. Heat, pressure, infection, medicines, foods, or other triggers may be involved, although a trigger is not always found. Itching alone does not show how serious the episode is; associated swelling and whole-body symptoms matter more.

Avoid scratching, hot showers, and any newly suspected trigger. Use cool compresses and loose clothing to reduce irritation. Record when the welts began, what you ate or took, and whether swelling or other symptoms followed. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is suitable for you, considering pregnancy, age, and other medicines.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or inside the mouth. Get prompt medical advice if hives keep returning, last beyond a short episode, become painful rather than itchy, leave bruising, or occur with fever, joint pain, vomiting, or marked weakness.
