When to Worry About Itchy Skin With Lichen Planus

Lichen planus may produce itchy, firm, flat-topped bumps or patches, often with a purplish or reddish tone. Scratching can break the surface and leave darker or lighter marks after inflammation settles. Changes inside the mouth, on the scalp, nails, or genital skin deserve specific attention because those sites may need different examination and care.

Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of rubbing. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser to dry skin and avoid harsh soaps, tight clothing, and newly introduced cosmetics over the rash. Follow the prescribed plan carefully, and tell your clinician if a treatment burns, causes new changes, or is difficult to use on a sensitive site.

Book an appointment if itching prevents sleep, lesions spread, skin repeatedly opens, or the diagnosis has not been confirmed. Seek prompt care for painful mouth sores that limit eating or drinking, eye symptoms, severe genital pain, or rapidly changing, bleeding, or non-healing areas. Urgent assessment is appropriate if you feel acutely unwell or the skin becomes hot and swollen.
