When to worry about itchy skin with contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis occurs when skin reacts to an irritant or an allergen. Itching may accompany redness, dryness, scaling, swelling, small bumps, or blisters in areas that touched the trigger. The rash can sometimes appear beyond the original contact area. A history of a new product, metal, plant, adhesive, or workplace exposure can help identify the cause.

Stop using a suspected new product or avoid the suspected exposure if you can do so safely, and rinse the skin gently when appropriate. Do not scratch or burst blisters. Use bland fragrance-free moisturiser and keep a note of products, materials, timing, and body areas involved. A clinician can advise whether patch testing or treatment is appropriate.

Arrange review when the rash persists after avoiding the suspected trigger, keeps returning, covers a broad area, or interferes with sleep or work. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked swelling, warmth, pain, pus, yellow crust, or fever. Get urgent help if the face, eyes, lips, or mouth swell, or if you develop wheezing or trouble breathing.
