When to worry about itchy eyes with allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis happens when the surface of the eye reacts to an allergen. Itching, watering, redness, and puffy eyelids often affect both eyes, and rubbing can make the irritation worse. A gritty feeling may occur, but significant pain or reduced vision is less typical and should not be dismissed as allergy.

Eye symptoms can also come from infection, a foreign body, contact-lens problems, or inflammation inside the eye. The pattern, discharge, exposure history, and effect on vision help a clinician tell these causes apart.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your hands, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Reduce exposure to the suspected allergen and keep windows or bedding as clean as practical. If you wear contact lenses, remove them while the eye is irritated and ask a professional when they are safe to resume.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable lubricating drops or allergy treatment. Do not use someone else’s eye drops, and avoid prolonged use of redness-relief drops without guidance.

Seek urgent eye assessment for moderate or severe pain, new blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, injury, a chemical splash, a bulging eye, or swelling that closes the eye. Prompt review is also needed for thick discharge, one-sided worsening, or symptoms that do not improve with allergy measures.

Ask whether both eyes fit an allergic pattern, whether contact lenses or medicines are contributing, and which drops are suitable. Ask how long to try treatment and which changes mean you should return sooner.
