When should you worry about irritability if you have hypoglycaemia?
Short answer
Irritability is a common presentation of Hypoglycaemia and may occur with sweating, shaking, hunger, weakness, or trouble thinking.

What irritability can mean
When blood glucose falls, body hormones can cause warning symptoms and behaviour changes. Irritability may be early, while drowsiness, confusion, seizures, or unconsciousness can follow. It is more concerning when sudden, follows diabetes medicine or missed food, or keeps recurring. Other conditions can cause irritability, so repeated episodes need review.
What you can do now
If you have diabetes, follow your personalised hypo plan and use your meter or sensor when available. If awake and able to swallow, take the fast-acting carbohydrate advised in your plan, then recheck as directed. Never give food or drink to someone drowsy, confused, unconscious, or unable to swallow. Record timing, readings, medicines, meals, and activity.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for a seizure, loss of consciousness, unsafe swallowing, persistent confusion, or failure to improve with the prescribed plan. Get prompt advice for repeated or nighttime episodes, or lows after treatment changes. Do not drive while symptomatic.
